Sunday mornings

My day started with: ‘Got up early and dropped electric toothbrush in toilet’. After that, we made coffee and sandwiches to go and headed north.

The first stop of the day was the Dallingeweersterweg near Termunten. There’s a lovely bird hide there. We saw Pied Avocet, Common Redshank, Bar-tailed Godwit, Swallows and the usual suspects. After that we drove to the Kiekkaaste, the bird hide located on the sea side of the dike, in Nieuwe Statenzijl.

European Hare (Lepus europaeus)

On our way up we spotted this drove of hares. There were about seven of them frolicking around. Two of them boxed for a moment, but I just missed it on camera. According to Wikipedia it is usually a female hitting a male, either to show that she is not yet quite ready to mate or as a test of his determination. Heh 🙂

We also saw wildflowers, some lovely red poppies and cornflowers.

Cornflower Centaurea cyanus

Here’s Mr Gwendolen walking towards the bird hide the Kiekkaaste. The reed had grown a lot since our last visit.
It was also wet 😐

More about the birds we saw there tomorrow.
